Community Building Partners

STOPPING THE CYCLE OF ABUSE

Our Approach and our Goals

  • Raise awareness of domestic violence.
  • Fund prevention programs at least as often as we fund more common treatment programs.
  • Partner with like-minded organizations.
  • Attract other foundations to the cause.
  • Focus our efforts in San Diego and Siouxland to maximize the impact of our resources.

In addition, the Waitt Institue for Violence Prevention has a four part strategy for increasing primary prevention efforts (awareness and education) and secondary prevention efforts (targeting high risk groups) in our communities of Siouxland and San Diego.

  • Provide early support and intervention for young families;
  • Work with children who have witnessed violence;
  • Help young people build healthy relationship skills
  • Engage leaders from all sectors of the community in a community-wide violence prevention public education campaign

FAST FACT

Victims of domestic violence are often trapped by a number of economic, social, religious, cultural, and emotional barriers in relationships with partners who are usually expert at convincing that "it will never happen again." Fear is the number one trap, and unfortunately it can become a vicious cycle.
