VANUATU
BLUE PROSPERITY PROGRAM
As an island nation comprised of 98% ocean and just 2% land, Vanuatu is an ocean state. Sustainably managing Vanuatu's water is critical for the people of Vanuatu and future generations to come. As a leader in the Pacific in ocean conservation, Vanuatu released the region's first National Ocean Policy in 2016.
The Government of Vanuatu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enter into a partnership with the Waitt Institute to implement 30% full protection of Vanuatu's waters and support sustainable ocean management in three core areas; Marine Spatial Planning, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Fisheries. This 5+ year Blue Prosperity program will be led by the Vanuatu Government and designed in a way to support inclusion, equity, and traditional knowledge to improve long-term economic stability, livelihoods, and ocean ecosystems. This partnership will cement the nation as a leading contributor in the global effort to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.
