Sustainable Fisheries Manager
Location: San Diego, CA
Hours: Full time (with nights and weekends as-needed)
Compensation: Commensurate with experience

The Waitt Institute is hiring a Sustainable Fisheries Manager to support sustainable fisheries and ecologically and ethically responsible seafood markets work across our global programs. Under the leadership of the Sustainable Fisheries Director, this position will work closely with partner governments, the fishing sector, NGOs, and academia on many aspects of our fisheries and markets work, including supporting analyses, developing fisheries strategies, assessment of markets opportunities and design of responsible conservation-based market interventions, and supporting improved fisheries management plans as relevant to a given country. This position will involve significant international travel (up to 30%).

The Waitt Institute is a team of international experts working around the globe to protect the world’s oceans and support coastal communities. The Institute is working with 10+ national and territorial governments to create sustainable ocean plans to help improve local livelihoods and economies while safeguarding marine life and ecosystems.
Responsibilities

Support Waitt Institute’s sustainable fisheries portfolio under the leadership of the Sustainable Fisheries Director

Work with teams of internal and external partners to implement sustainable fisheries and responsible seafood market strategies at program sites in partnership with government and key stakeholders

Ensure sustainable fisheries and markets work integrates with marine spatial planning, blue economy, science, legal, and communications portfolios

Build and maintain a dashboard in one of the organization’s management platforms to track progress of planned activities.
Professional Qualifications
-
5+ years of fisheries related experience, with demonstrated expertise working with a variety of fisheries stakeholders from fishers, producers, domestic and international buyers, to fisheries managers and legislators

Ideally, experience developing market-based solutions for sustainable fisheries, designing fisheries management systems, or a related portfolio of work

Experience in facilitation, gaining buy-in and building consensus with governments and private sector institutions in developing or emerging economies

Reliable, responsive, comfortable working across time zones

Bachelor’s degree (graduate degree preferred) or equivalent in fisheries science, fisheries economics, fisheries management, or related field

Experience in responsible seafood markets interventions to improve sustainability of fisheries will be considered a plus

Demonstrated program management skills and experience with program management tools like Asana preferably, but also open-access alternatives like Excel, Google Sheets, and similar programs
