Policy and Program Management Intern


Location: San Diego, CA (remote)

Hours: Part-time or full-time                   

Duration: 3-9 months

Compensation: $20/hr

Start: Feb/Mar 2021


Care about the environment and want to make a difference? You will be supporting a team of international experts working around the globe to protect the world’s oceans. The Waitt Institute is working with 8+ national and territorial governments to create sustainable ocean plans to help improve local livelihoods and economies while safeguarding marine life and ecosystems.


The Waitt Institute is seeking a self-motivated and detail-oriented intern to support program management across project sites. This position will work directly with our Program Directors and Program Manager as well as other Waitt Institute colleagues and partners. This internship provides an opportunity to gain knowledge about ocean conservation and develop a broad skill set while supporting the Waitt Institute’s mission to support sustainable, resilient, and thriving seas that benefit all.

  • Conduct secondary research and synthesize scientific papers, government reports, and other documents on topics related to ocean conservation, conservation finance, and sustainable development

  • Copy edit reports and other materials

  • Design and edit program materials such as flyers, posters, and fact sheets

  • Provide support to program management staff, including supporting project tracking, developing reports and memos, and other tasks as needed

  • Support development of reports, including data analysis, drafting, editing, and managing logistics for multi-author audience



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics, policy, social science, or other related field

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Ability to synthesize and communicate information quickly and effectively

  • Excellent project and time management skills

  • Adaptable to shifting priroties, assignments, and timelines

  • Knowledge about science and policy pertaining to ocean conservation
