Science Manager

           

Location: San Diego, CA 

Hours: Full time (with some nights and weekends)

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

 

Care about the environment and want to make a difference? You will be joining a team of international experts working around the globe to protect the world’s oceans. The Waitt Institute is working with 10+ nations and territories to create sustainable ocean plans to will help improve local livelihoods and economies while safeguarding the marine life and ecosystems. 

 

We are looking for a person to support marine spatial planning who has excellent project management skills,  expertise in GIS, and demonstrated scientific report writing for both scientific and non-scientific audiences. The ideal applicant will thrive in a fast pace environment be able to collaborate effectively with a wide variety of people from government officials to fishers. This is not an academic research position.

 

Like to travel? The position requires substantial international travel (40-60% time).

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead marine spatial planning efforts, draft science and policy work products, oversee and lead scientific and field projects

  • Guide contractors, stakeholders and government officials in several countries

  • Develop consistent methodology for monitoring and evaluating marine environments in diverse geographic locations

  • Operate in partnership with the Waitt Institute staff to ensure the success of robust interdisciplinary programs

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Masters degree or equivalent in marine sciences or related field  

  • Ability to produce research reports, scientific papers, factsheets, etc. 

  • GIS expertise, including building geodatabases, creating thematic maps

  • At least 3 years of project management experience with the ability to lead scientific programs

  • Skilled in tracking progress using metrics and working with a geographically dispersed team

 

Preferred

  • PhD or equivalent in marine sciences with at least 5 years of experience

  • Expertise in marine spatial planning

  • Expertise in R, Python, Excel, Marxan, and related programs
